Zootopia

*This post may contain spoilers. I have tried to keep them to the minimum but sometimes they may just slip through.

A couple of weeks ago I went to see the new animated film Zootopia (or Zootropolis as I believe it is named in the UK). For those you who haven’t seen it, it is about a bunny who dreams of becoming a police officer in the big city. The world is created where all the animals, prey and predator alike, live together in harmony. One of my favourite things about this film is that the main bunny’s last name is the same spelling as my maiden name, but that has little bearing on my post today.

I loved the film and would highly recommend it for adults and children alike. Before you begin to panic and wonder if I suddenly have become a film blog I haven’t I am just taking a while to get to my point please bear with me.

So my point… There were so many themes that I could draw from this movie that could inspire a healthier lifestyle. To the one of learning to love your neighbour as yourself to never giving up on yourself and the latter point is what I am going to focus on today.

The theme tune for Zootopia is by Shakira called Try Everything. Below are the chorus lyrics to the song:

Birds don’t just fly, they fall down and get up
Nobody learns without getting it wrong

I won’t give up, no I won’t give in
Till I reach the end and then I’ll start again
No I won’t leave, I wanna try everything
I wanna try even though I could fail
I won’t give up, no I won’t give in
Til I reach the end and then I’ll start again
No I won’t leave, I wanna try everything
I wanna try even though I could fail

This whole chorus is full of things that could be used to encourage a healthier lifestyle. Even though there is a chance of failure, we may fall we can try again. Too often in life we become discouraged. We try ten different diets and none of them work or we attempt to give up smoking but the desire is too strong. As a pharmacist I have often spoke to patients who have tried and failed at something and no longer feel they have the support to try again. People were there for them the first few tries but now they feel no one expects them to be able to change their behaviour and with it they have lost all self-belief too.

We all have health problems that we have to face, be they spiritual, mental or physical. Even those who seem the most healthy can fall and have to get up again, just like the birds in the song. But as 1 Corinthians 9:24 says below you need to run. Only one person might win the prize but as cheesy as it may sound you need to be in it to win in it. The race to health may be your own battle and there will be times you need to be carried and times you will carry others too but without trying you will get nowhere.

Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it.” (1 Corinthians 9:24)
