“[ Do Not Worry ] ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” (Matthew 6:25)
Food is something I have always loved. I will be walking down the street, see a bakery and drool over the cakes and pies that they have on offer. The moment my mind is given a second to rule itself the first thing it runs for is food, tricking me into suddenly thinking I am starving. But worse than that, I have the false belief that every time I successfully complete a task, no matter how big or small then I deserve a treat (very much like a pet).
It can be easy in our all access western world to fill up on the wrong types of food. Food has become something we hoard and have excess of, a lot of it not even healthy or natural. We keep our cupboards stocked and throw vast quantities of this food away as the eat by dates come and go.
The passage above is followed by Jesus telling us that the Father will provide for us just as he does the birds, who do not sow or store food in barns. But this can be difficult in our modern world where food is readily available and easy for us to store up with little effort. Many of us do not grow our own food anymore, some do not even cook their own food.
Todays post is a call to not only eat healthier food but also lets look at some of the ways we can reduce our own waste. My husband and I are trying to make a conscience effort to eat more fruit and vegetables at the moment but with that can be wastage as they go out of date. Each mealtime has turned into inventing new ways to incorporate the vegetables and/or fruit in ways that will ensure that they are eaten before they go off. We are trying to shop for only what we need, reducing our need to store food excess, helped a little by not having a car to pick up our groceries at the moment. Finally I hope one day we can grow some of our own fruit and vegetables.
I am sure there is more that we could be doing more and maybe one do we will. Nevertheless just as the passage says above “is not life more than food?”
